In doing so, the JCDU should seek to provide confidence to local government that this is a long-term commitment. It must also urgently develop a plan to reduce the demand for illegal drugs. The current lack of emphasis on preventing illegal drug use means that departments risk only addressing the consequences, rather than the causes, of harm. The government will only achieve value for money if it builds on the initial momentum of the new strategy and develops a longer-term, funded plan that delivers a joined-up, holistic response. The aim of the service is to help reduce the impact of alcohol and drug misuse by providing drug and alcohol treatment and recovery services which will and allow more adults to make a meaningful recovery.

However, these services are isolated examples of good practice and provision is inconsistent across the country. Adfam – Adfam is a national charity who are tackling the negative effects of drugs and alcohol on family members and friends. If your child is caught in possession of a controlled drug, they have committed a criminal offence. It is extremely dangerous to mix different drugs, including taking drugs and alcohol together. Teach your child about the effects of drugs and make sure they’re aware of the risks. Addaction provide a free, confidential webchat service to those in need of addiction support or for their families. If the offence is possession with intent to supply, supply, production or importation the court will determine the offender’s culpability and the harm caused. The maximum sentence depends on whether a person is porno charged with possession, supply or production, and what class of drug the offence is related to.

  • While there are a limited number of existing helplines run by small charities and support groups, these only cover a small proportion of the UK, and report significant demand.

A frequent user is defined as having taken any drug more than once a month in the last year. Around 280,000 young people aged 16 to 24 years were frequent drug users in the year ending March 2023 (4.7%), no statistically significant change compared with the year ending March 2020. Prevalence of ecstasy use in the last year was at its lowest level since data were first collected. Around 1.1% of people aged 16 to 59 years and 2.4% of people aged 16 to 24 years reported taking this drug in the last year.

They try and replicate drugs such as cocaine, cannabis and ecstasy. This Act came into force on 26th May 2016 and bans all psychoactive substances (“legal highs”). It makes it an offence to produce, supply, offer to supply, possess with intent to supply, import and export psychoactive substances, and to possess a psychoactive substance in a custodial institution. The Home Secretary can make a substance or product a temporary class drug using a Temporary Class Drug Order.

Drug checking services allow people to anonymously submit samples of drugs for testing, enabling them to make more informed decisions, and put them in contact with support services. The SDCF evidence paper (2021) outlined how facilities will aim to reduce the risks of disease transmission, prevent drug-related overdose deaths and connect high-risk drug users with treatment and other  services. It was created with insights from parents and carers with lived experience of supporting their child or young person with alcohol and drugs. The CSEW does not cover some small groups, which is potentially important, given that they may have relatively high rates of drug use. Notably these groups include homeless people and those living in certain institutions, such as prisons. The CSEW data for the year ending March 2023 are not National Statistics and caution must be taken when using these data. Those with household incomes of less than £10,400 per year were more likely to use any drug in the last year (13.6%), and in particular cannabis (11.6%), than those with higher incomes. The only exception in both instances being those earning between £10,400 and £20,800 (Figure 6).
